DJ Basilisk - Moonshadow

Moonshadow is a classic psytrance mix originally composed for the Global Goa Party, a virtual event conceived to “create the soundtrack for a full night (and morning) of old-school Goa trance by ten DJs from all over the world.” The rules were simple: record a mix with music that would have been heard on the dance floor in 1999. I snapped up the 12:30 to 2:00am time slot and spent weeks scouring my collection for the right stuff to hasten the journey into darkness and lunacy. Naturally, this exercise aroused great nostalgia for my own initiation into psytrance culture sometime in 1997 or 1998. Since many of my earliest memories of partying in Toronto were formed at events thrown by the Moonshadow collective I decided to dedicate this mix to DJ Dam, Cyber G, Yohimbe, John Dee, and everyone else who was there in the beginning.

  • Recorded with Traktor and a Korg Nanokontrol at Ilum Studios, Gibsons, B.C.
  • This was my first studio recording after switching to an all-digital DJing setup in 2009. I was still getting the hang of Traktor and figuring out what worked and what didn’t.
  • I spent about four straight days arranging and practising with the material until finally getting down to business.
  • 25,000 downloads and 3,500 listens as of April 2021.

Time Periods

Series: Global Goa Party

Global Goa Party is a series of virtual events organized by Marsh at the Goat Ranch, a blog dedicated to old school Goa trance. Each event is broadcast live on web radio, transporting listeners to some point in the past, while challenging DJs to produce a mix suitable for their time slot using only music available at that time. I assembled night-time sets for the years 1996, 1997, and 1999, which are all available here in their uncut, full-length versions.

  1. Moonshadow
  2. In Exile
  3. Blacklight Metropolis

  1. Thanks for sharing man – caught it while it was playing, loved it. So many great tracks, gonna be listening to this all week ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. I started listening to psy in ’99, so this is really a trip back to the beginning for me. Thanks a lot!

  3. Wonderful, i thought Shakta and hallucinogen would be perfect for the old night twisting but this is great too.

  4. Hey Basilisk, where can I get the time slots for the entire mix, like the hours and minutes when each set starts in that one big 2GB file?

  5. This is a really great mix Alexander. Keep these coming! Brings back memories. Hard to believe this music was being made so long and yet is so amazingly intelligent with really great sound structure. I miss these days so much.

  6. Thx a lot for this wicked mix. It reminds me to the times when Iยดve organized my own Parties here in Germany and I met almost every artist . Thx so much for this timecapsule that takes me back.

  7. @Rf: I’ve got those timestamps in a text file at home, I simply forgot to post ’em! I’ll post another comment here when I put them up on the Goat Ranch.

  10. This mix is AMAZING! Such a phenomenal selection of classic tracks! HOORAY!! ๐Ÿ˜€ Please forgive me, but I must point out that the Electric Sheep GMS track was actually released from Hadshot Haheizar, and not TIP… hahaha I am obsessive compulsive, please don’t mind me!

  11. Ah, the Goa Gods. I came a bit late (1999) but I remember these guys when I pounded dance floors from Japan to Australia until late 2001. Why isn’t Space Cat in there somewhere? Oh well. Great mix!!
