Notes
- Special thanks to Rob Aldred (of Cosmic Soundwaves, Protean Soundwaves, and The Psychedelic Muse) for his creative input, inspiration, and patronage. If you enjoy the sounds of this mix you are also invited to check out the Psybient community on Reddit!
- Recorded at Hexing Studio, Taipei, with Traktor and a Korg Nanokontrol. I recorded it in two sessions with about a week in between. I didn’t actually know how the mix would end until about halfway through the second session (though I could visualize the “story arc” after finishing the first recording). Most of my work in composition was on the setup, building things from the ground up to really get the music flowing. The last third or so came together really quickly.
- For the cover design my aim was to capture something of the diversity and otherworldliness of sound reflected in the mix. To start with I pulled up some of my own photos of the east coast of Taiwan to use as a base. From there I desaturated most elements apart from the buttercream clouds. The spectral gradient is an obvious allusion to the “colours” motif and a field of stars completes the picture.
- The name of the mix is a tribute to TIP Records, one of the seminal Goa trance record labels, who put out a series of “colours” compilations to kickstart the movement. Actually, their work was later recompiled into a CD series named The Colours of Shiva. These were among the first trance CDs I ever purchased.
- Released under a Creative Commons license for noncommercial usage. (Since all material used in the mix is Creative Commons-licensed it is possible to also apply this license to the mix itself!)
- In an amusing twist, this mix was removed from YouTube for copyright violations solely because one song samples something mainstream.
- In another curious twist, Mixcloud has a policy that blocks streaming in some territories when a mix features three or more tracks from the same artist, presumably as a means of discouraging anyone from uploading whole albums. Over the course of 69 tracks I included multiple selections from several artists, and crossed the threshold with Globular and Wolfen Technologies. After reaching out to support staff we were able to come to an understanding and this mix is rightfully available for streaming in all territories.
- This mix was officially released on both Ektoplazm and Omnitropic with catalog codes EKTMX01 and OMNI MX01.
- Tagline: a 5-hour, 69-track midtempo and downtempo odyssey mixed by Ektoplazm’s founder, Basilisk.

nice selection, also with my personal favourite – occulting lights.
Замечательно =)
We couldn’t be more thrilled to be on this mix with the other crazy ass artists in here. This is ridiculously kick ass. Thanks to DJ Basilisk for keeping the psy strong!
Great Ektoplazm!!!
Great ektoplasm 😀 !!!
music for freedom !
Great compilation!
Happy to see here some of my favourite tracks 🙂
Thanks to Basilisk and all the artists present here!
great work!!!!!:)))))
good one bbBasilisk
excelente seleção!
Cue file is defective: many tracks exceed 75 frames – Selection is phenomenal though!
Oh my god, I am really excited to listen this through. from beginning to end without stop, that’s the way it has to be. thank you!
p.s.: it is indeed true, that a couple of tracks exceed 75 frames in the cue file.
Outstanding Selection Basilisk!! Greetings from Costa Rica, Pura Vida.
I’ve been listening to this all day as I work on design projects. Inspiring tunes and smooth flow of best-of-the-best tracks for the last 3 hours. And I still have another 2 hours to go … i’m hooked.
Geez… this beast is freakin’ huge. It will take me all year to digest this thing. Good work!!
One of my perks for donating to the Ektoplazm Metamorphosis campaign was an exclusive mix prepared by DJ Basilisk in the style of my choosing. I asked him to prepare a downtempo mix, and suggested he put together an all-Ektoplazm creation so we could share it with the world. This is a gesture of appreciation for Ektoplazm, the community that supports it, and all the wonderful artists I’ve discovered through Ektoplazm through the years. I hope you love it as much as I do.
Pumped. Maybe we could get some track bpms?
Hey, nice rythm-selection!
I cannot split the cue file? why is that? Anyway thank you for this collection of beauty.
@ shr00mie
just open the cue sheet with notepad. u will see and index for every track in the following format: minute:second:frame. now at some songs the frame’s value exceeds 75 (75 frames = 1 second), just correct it to a number BELOW 75, let’s say 74, and then you will be able to split the flac using the cue sheet.
Another solution is (if you don’t necessarily want each song in individual files but would like to see the songs listed out) that u can use such audio players, that support cue sheets, for instance AIMP. U just drag in the file and it will list it out as individual songs (even with the defective cue sheet).
СПАСИБО!!!
Big Ups to Dj Basilisk! Massive appreciation for putting me on this epic mix alongside a list of such world class downtempo artists. On the DL now, can’t wait to hear the full mix once I get to the office 🙂
I want this on CD.
Wow this looks amazing, I downloaded and have yet to listen but I am sure its a gem. Good tracklist!!
Amazing choices, the whole package is beyond perfection.
非常伟大的MIX,感谢DJ basilisk的编译,感谢EKTOPLAZM这个充满能量的网站。5小时的旅程,超越了时间,超越了空间。很棒!
incredible as expected! thanks so much.
I am so excited about this release with so many masterpieces in it! Some tracks were unknown to me until now and made me search for the full albums were they came from (e.g. Kurbeats/Sub Serum and Perfect Blind/Syncope) to find some more treasures on this amazing website. So I want to appreciate all the artists which contributed to this release! A big Thank You to you all!
Very good set! Contains most of my favorite melodic tracks from artists published on Ektoplazm.
GOOD JOB. Thank you!
Что за композиция играла с 1.56- 1.58 ?
Essenxisponantial Shonery Transremembraner. Prismatic 9oo6 release DJ Basilisk.
Wow 5 hours! This was pretty phenomenal. Great tracklist. I queued it up around 7pm last night while at work, and 5 hours later getting ready to go home in my car, it stopped. A full solid 5 hours of music kept me working pretty well last night. Good job!
Amazing! Pure psychedelic and really good tracks, glad to see Phone Booth Robbers !
@Carma Thanks for the tip, I was also wondering about the defective cue file- I changed the text in the cue file and was able to split the tracks successfully!
Choosing the Opening Track must have been a tasking thing given all the possibilities, but I should admit, I just love the intro into the mix – amazing!
The trip itself? Phenomenal – and that’s to be expected of Ektoplazm anyways…
Ride to the beach, grab a joint, close thy eyes, and let the shaman Basilisk guide thine soul into the inner mysteries of the cosmos….
EKTOPLASM 4EVER!
BASILISK 4PREZIDENT0!
Jesus christ, this is a phenomenal mix.
You have CLEARLY proven yourself to be a Greater Basilisk, rather than a Lesser one.
Way to be, dude!
I have recently discovered the Ektoplazm site. Absolutely in awe at the phenomenal musical talent showcased on Ektoplazm! I am now on a journey of musical discovery and I have been bouncing around ever since. The site is comprehensive, informative, user friendly and most certainly aimed at music connoisseurs who are looking for those deeper musical experiences and cutting edge technology! My life is complete! Basiliek, your talent shines through strongly, keep up the amazing work! I am so thrilled to be a part of this! You have a fan for life!! Thank you so so much for opening my mind and filling my life with awesomeness!!! #AllSmiles
Шикарнейший сборник….. Отличный сайт! Спасибо!
Great stuff, thanks!
Thanks for an awesome compilation, DJ Basilisk.
Been listening to this non-stop at home and in the car. If I didn’t have to listen to my co-workers, I’d listen to it there as well 😀
There are some transitions/progressions my ears find a bit strange but that is minor.
To think I used to prefer full-on… now enjoying the slower mental-journey-inducing sound a lot more.
I thought I heard some Ekoplex in there somewhere but don’t see it on the track list.
This is by far the best work I’ve download from this site… actually any site… this is the best thing I’ve downloaded… ever!!
The way you kept such an amazing rhythm from start to finish for a 5 hour long sound journey. Really impressive!!
I’m in so much love with compilation of gems 😀
Thank you so much for this great work and awesome website 🙂
I knew when I saw it had 69 tracks, it was going to be a superb listen ;D
ОТ ВСЕЙ ДУШИ СПАСИБО!!!
Excellent build) Thanks!
Excellent free music site through Ektoplazm………..
Very nice tracklist, very well mixed!
Центриньо )))
This mix is so good it’s ridiculous, and I don’t think I’ve even made it halfway through yet, can’t wait til I do! Thanks and props from Colorado, USA!
I have been listening to this a lot lately, and I am wondering if there is a track list with times so I can track down some tracks? 😀 If not that is fine, just wondering. Thanks again!
Oops. The “tabs” didn’t carry over – I didn’t think it thru and it didn’t look as big before I hit send, sorry.
you done a good job ! listen to this since two weeks !!!stay calm !!!!!
I apologize for the long delay in fixing the cue sheets! It took me a little while to figure out what went wrong. I was exporting times from Sound Forge but hadn’t switched to “Time & Frames” mode hence the cue sheets packaged with the release are invalid. I’m very sorry about that and will work to update the original files as soon as I can (which may take a while; those files are huge).
So Epic! Thanks and much love from South Africa <3
Un poco tarde pero con muchas ganas de disfrutar este gran compilado.
Saludos desde México y esperemos verlos por aquí.
if anyone is still interested in easily breaking up this massive mp3, try using ‘medieval CUE splitter’. I just downloaded it for free and drag-and-dropped the .cue file in to the program and it split it all perfectly for me. Awesome!
Don’t use Medieval Cue Splitter – it doesn’t work properly.

Use CueTools instead (http://www.cuetools.net/wiki/Main_Page), or foobar2000 (http://www.foobar2000.org/) – they both work properly.
My 1rst post here! Thanks for this labour of love. Great intro to Ektoplazm. Styles and artists gathered in a tasteful progression. Thanks also for the fixed cue sheet. A real treat.
And now, I’m on my way to dl all these gems in proper albums. What a treasure trove!
My ambient collection began on vinyl years ago with Eno’s Discreet Music, William Orbit’s Torch Song, The Residents, Terry Riley, Les Disques du Crépuscule, ECM…
Yeah! All of you guys keep the flaame alive and carry it beyond the galaxy! -xoxox

For those who are a little less fluent in Latin, please can we have a dumbed-down, step by step guide on how to split the media file. I have Winamp and itunes. Downloaded the Cuetools, I get a an error on the output when I drag the .cue file in and hitr “go” ! PLEASE HELP!
Nevermind. Went and brushed up on my Latin (okay I’m lying, Foobar was simple and easy). Sorted thanks
Exceptional comp. Thanks to all the artists and Ektoplazm for the download! medieval CUE splitter works great for me
This is an awesome collection!! Peace and love beautiful souls! 🙂
Shure looking forward to this..sit back relax and let the music flow..Thanx!
When are we going to get a Colours of Ektoplazm – volume 2? If you ever plan on doing another mix under this name, It would be highly anticipated and given my full support. I think it would be difficult to top this!
