DJ Basilisk presents Intangible Frontiers 3, a genre-defying mix originally commissioned by Psybient.org for their long-running podcast series and released under the name Resilience. This meticulously-curated journey contains multitudes: ambient and modular dreamscapes, bucolic IDM and futuristic electro breaks, quirky nu-disco workouts, deep and organic house and trance, bubbling acid experiments, shimmering slabs of dub techno, and more than a few references to the origins of psychedelic trance culture on the beaches of South and Southeast Asia. A careful selection of harmonically compatible source material allows for long, layered transitions, sometimes with three or four tracks playing simultaneously. Ideally this creates a sort of auditory illusion where tracks meld together and time collapses, making it effortless to lose yourself in this musical microcosm. Finally, on an emotional level, this mix is often more hopeful and perhaps even inspirational, though it is not without melancholy and sadness at times, a reflection of the global zeitgeist.

Notes
- This mix was commissioned by Psybient.org and originally premiered on Soundcloud.
- The intention with this guest mix was two-fold: to expand the horizons of what we consider “psychedelic downtempo” by exploring a wide range of adjacent and compatible styles of electronic music; and to demonstrate advanced mixing techniques in a chill out set, where many DJs merely make brief, sometimes dissonant transitions between tracks.
- It was released as Resilience (a name chosen by Psybient.org) and later retconned into the Intangible Frontiers series as the third edition. It didn’t feel right leaving it out, as it was very much the spiritual predecessor of what I’m doing with IF.
- The introductory sequence might sound a little uncomfortable by design.
- This mix accreted around Taurus, which immediately caught my ear and demanded to be sutured into this project.
- I’ve been looking for a way to fit Mogambo’s heavy but slow remix of Stone Bridge into a set for a while, and I was delighted to hear how well it meshed with Full Circle’s remix of a song by Khun Fluff. Both tracks have both a Thai and a Taiwanese connection.
- There’s plenty of dub techno and even some actual dub reggae toward the end of this mix, a common motif explored through many of my mixes these years.
- Vocals were employed sparingly but with intent.
- Dedicated to the resilience of the Ukrainian people.
