DJ Basilisk - Intangible Frontiers 1

Intangible Frontiers 1

DJ Basilisk channels a sense of curiosity, wanderlust, and transcendence on Intangible Frontiers 1, the first in a new mix series dedicated to sonic world-building at the deeper end of the electronic music spectrum. Rather than focus on one specific genre, this mix explores the borderlands of style, where music cultures meet, interface, and exchange ideas. Gathering source material from across these intangible frontiers, Basilisk smoothly blends dark disco, cosmic house, progressive trance, dub techno, midtempo breaks, electro, and new age ambient, always with a dreamy, psychedelic touch. The resulting two hour mix is a complete journey into sound, promising transportation to distant realms of the imagination and back again.

Notes

  • Conceived, arranged, mixed, and mastered by DJ Basilisk in Vancouver, Canada, November 2022.
  • Recorded with Traktor 3 and a Korg Nanokontrol.
  • Mastered in Ableton Live using TDR Nova and LoudMax; wave surgery conducted with Audacity.
  • Cover image: a composite produced with Stable Diffusion and heavily edited in Adobe Photoshop.
  • The opening track was chosen, in part, because of the sample, but I also wanted to begin this mix series with a reference to my current locale. YUF-O is a side project of Vancouver-based Yu Su and Francis Inferno Orchestra from Australia, mirroring my own transpacific experience.
  • This mix quickly accreted around the incomparable remix of Nasnusa that shines so brightly in the early half of the journey. If you find the song as catchy as I do I strongly encourage you to check out the video.
  • Black Harmala Disko Club features a vocal sample from Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the legendary qawwali singer.
  • Dubspeeka’s remix of Wait For Me came to my attention via John Digweed’s Live in Tokyo (2018). It became a regular staple of my deeper sets in Taipei in the years that followed.
  • I’ve been looking for an excuse to slip Raindance into a mix for quite some time now.
  • Influx is available for free download from the Troll N’ Roll Bandcamp page.
