DJ Basilisk revisits the classic psytrance sound on Transmissions From Valhalla, a monumental 4+ hour journey featuring more than 60 tracks released between 1997 and 2005. This time around the focus is mainly on the many permutations of the “minimal wave” that swept through the scene in the early years of the new millennium. Expect to hear a wide variety of hypnotic atmospheres, quirky rhythms, and brutal beats as the pressure builds toward a raging full-on mind-bending climax. The return path explores the deeper and more sublime side of progressive psytrance before unraveling with shimmering breakbeats and dubbed-out electronica.

Notes
- Conceived, arranged, mixed, and mastered by DJ Basilisk in Taipei, Taiwan, July 2022.
- Recorded with Traktor 3 and a Korg Nanokontrol.
- Mastered in Ableton Live using TDR Nova and LoudMax; wave surgery conducted with Audacity.
- Cover image: Karl L. Prinz’s Auf Walhall, 1911.
- This mix was originally based on a set I performed at Round in Toronto in 2019. As usual things got out of hand and not until Sublime does this mix touch on material actually played at that show. For years I kept notes under the working title Hogtown Special.
- Several tracks appear here in remastered form: Monochrome, Bad Pets, Tannga, and Ground Zero.
- I made several custom edits and refixes for this mix: Candy From The Strange Side was edited for length and lightly remastered; Mechanical Unit was remastered and the dial-up modem sound was made slightly less ear-piercing; Vectra In Bedrock was remastered to address some peculiar phasing issues; Tripoid was edited to fit and remastered for stereo depth; Cascade (Part 2) was remastered and shortened to fit; Screwdriver and Glow were declicked.
- I’ve been meaning to open a mix with Juno Reactor’s Nitrogen Part 2 for ages, not knowing that Chrisbo had already done so on Explorations 2: The Travel Bug for Return to the Source. After realizing this I decided to introduce the mix with some broken beat excursions to set the mood.
- The combination of Blowfish and Taksi is one I’ve used as far back as 2005; it also appears in an unreleased live recording from an event by the name of Organic Tumbleweed.
- Triple Helix was really ahead of the curve, being released in 1997 while much of the rest of the core material hails from 2000 or later.
- Cream is one of the very first techtrance tunes I ever liked. I was such a devout and hardcore melodic Goa trance fan that my initial reaction to the minimal wave was scorn and derision, but Midi Miliz began to change all that.
- I previously featured Valhalla on Mystical Revelation in 2006.
- The Orb’s sublime remix of Radio Babylon is one of the tunes that got me into electronic music. As soon as I saw how well it matched with Mystical Chants I knew I had to make use of it.
- Several tracks featured here are lesser known side projects of more famous artist: Blowfish (Graham Wood of The Infinity Project); Nerve (Mittelstandskinder Ohne Strom); and Green House Effects (Sandman).
- Perhaps contrary to expectations, Xirtam is produced by Freq (Sean Deason), not FREq (Aran Gallagher).
