DJ Basilisk - Transmissions From Lyonesse

dj-basilisk-transmissions-from-lyonesse

DJ Basilisk returns to the ecstatic idealism of the early 1990s on Transmissions From Lyonesse, the latest in an ongoing series of concept mixes documenting electronic music subcultures of the past. This time around the journey leads from scintillating ambient techno arpeggios and idyllic IDM to the raging heights of full-on Goa trance (and back again). Ultimately the aim is to capture some of the magic of the outdoor festival experience circa 1996, particularly in the UK and continental Europe. Many of these tracks are rough around the edges, and several have been lightly edited and remastered exclusively for this mix.

Notes

  • Conceived, arranged, mixed, and mastered by DJ Basilisk in Taipei, Taiwan, March 2023.
  • Recorded with Traktor 3 and a Korg Nanokontrol.
  • Mastered in Ableton Live using TDR Nova and LoudMax; wave surgery conducted with Audacity.
  • Cover image: Mount St Michael, Cornwall, Clarkson Frederick Stanfield, 1830.
  • Numerous tracks in this mix were edited, repitched, and/or remastered specifically for this mix. These include Eclipse, Ion Horse, Something Liquid, Close Zen Counters, Nothing Like a Good Friend, and Point Zero.
  • Several others appear here in commercially remastered form: Wanderlicht (from this reissue), Optimum Flux (from Mystique of the Metaverse), Bony Incus (from Revisitation), Whirlrain of Water (from Mind Rewind 2), Velocity (from Slumber, and Hall of Mirrors from B12 Records Archive Volume 3.
  • Morphem’s Something Liquid normally plays at 151 BPM, but I prefer it down around 140 BPM, hence the drastic change in pacing.
  • Prana’s Lifeforce was produced by Tsuyoshi Suzuki and Chris Deckker of Medicine Drum in 1994 or 1995 but only released on vinyl in 1996. The version that appears here was released on Goa Trance Volume Three.
  • Despite being a huge classic, every copy of Point Zero released seems to have a rather obvious glitch at around 3:23. The version that appears here is an edit that stitches together atmosphere to restore a continuous flow. Even so, it still sounds pretty rough.
  • Artist trivia: Unreal is an early project by Petar Dundov, and Code 6 is an alias of Joey Beltram.
  • Naturally there is a connection between the title of the mix and the inclusion of one of Tristan’s first dance floor bombs! The legendary Tristan was, in some tellings, the King of Lyonesse.
