Basilisk captures the halcyon morning sound of outdoor festival season with Esoteric Expanse 2, an extended four hour mix rooted in the deeper end of progressive psytrance. Expect a playful and free-spirited blend of styles featuring several permutations of progressive house, dream trance, and dub techno, with just enough midtempo breakbeat and spaced-out ambient to provide a sublime introduction and soft landing. Basilisk also delivers on the promise of harmonic mixing with smooth transitions, seamlessly layering rhythm and melody to obscure where one track ends and the next begins. Prepare to kick up some dust and bask in the warmth of the rising sun as the story unfolds!

This mix is dedicated to everyone around the world missing out on festival season throughout these pandemic years. Hopefully we’ll all be together again soon! Shout out to all the summer festivals that inspired my development as a DJ and music fan: Harvest Festival, Om Reunion Project, All Stars, Shambhala, Eclipse, WEMF, Spacecamp Psyfari, Sacred Earth, and Earthfest.

Notes

  • Conceived, arranged, mixed, and mastered by DJ Basilisk in Taipei, Taiwan, May 2021.
  • Recorded using Traktor 3, a Korg Nanokontrol 1, and an Allen & Heath Xone:K2; stitched together using Audacity.
  • Mastered in Ableton Live using TDR Nova and LoudMax.
  • The artwork features imagery by Tanaka Juuyoh released into the public domain.
  • Originally premiered on Radiozora as Radiant Flux, but after reflecting on the similarities with Hermetic Expanse, I decided to alter the name and make it part of a new series of mixes as Radiant Expanse.
  • My edit of Eitan Reiter’s remix of Dusty Kid’s classic tune Psika was made specifically for this mix. I go into greater detail about what was changed on SoundCloud.
  • I was only recently introduced to State Azure through this Xavier Morel mix for Blue Room, so I was happy to include a pair of his evocative tunes.
  • After the enormous amount of effort I sunk into completing Uroboros 1 I decided to take it easy and not impose any artist or label restrictions this time around. The results are far less ambitious but still more involved than most DJ mixes in this style, and despite not concerning myself about repeating artists and labels, there’s still a ton of material in this mix that you wouldn’t hear in combination anywhere else.
  • Even though this isn’t formally part of my Uroboros series of mixes it also ends where it began, forming a loop.
  • I was planning to keep it mostly current but ended up including a bunch of summer festival classics from back in the day.
  • This is one of my only mixes in this style not to feature anything by Extrawelt or Minilogue. I tried working both in at various junctures but it never sounded quite right.
  • This was originally intended to be a quick and snappy 2 hour mix but as usual I got sidetracked, which is common these days. Including that dub techno sequence toward the end inspired me to take it all the way back to the beginning.

Esoteric Expanse is a series of long-form mixes exploring diverse styles centered on individual musical worlds, but also including other sounds in their outer haloes. Every mix in this series is programmed with long introductions and comedowns, building from silence and eventually returning to the void.
