DJ Basilisk charts a course to the outer reaches of space and sound with Esoteric Expanse 6, part of in an ambitious series of mixes devoted to sonic world-building and cross-genre experimentation. This epic journey spans more than 4 hours and features 62 tracks ranging from the abyssal depths of ambient to high octane psychedelic trance. Abstract and glitchy IDM set the mood, evolving into cybernetic electro and modular techno as the pace quickens, eventually breaking through to mind-melting darkpsy and the eerie gloom of forest music. Engines reverse after reaching a peak at 155 BPM, beginning a tumultuous descent through bewitching twilight, energetic full-on, and new school Goa trance, finally grounding out with wispy traces of tech house and dub techno, experimental bass music, and ice-cold ambient.

Conceived, designed, mixed, and mastered by DJ Basilisk in Taipei, Taiwan, and Vancouver, Canada, from August to October 2022.
Recorded in several sessions using Traktor 3 and a Korg Nanokontrol.
Mastered in Ableton Live using TDR Nova and LoudMax; wave surgery conducted with Audacity.
Source material for the artwork includes public domain imagery by Tanaka Juuyoh (3D rendering) and NASA (background).

This mix began as an experiment in mixing electro into darkpsy.
Tempos range from 140 BPM to 155 BPM, dropping back down to the 130s before dissolving into beatless ambient.
SAAH’s killer tune Engage is also available for free download from Bandcamp.
Much of the darkpsy segment of the mix features music from Brazil or Greece.
Quirky pop music references can be heard in Milchmau5. I suspect this is something of an in-joke referencing the foot in the logo of Parvati Records.
Dipping into full-on territory required some restraint; due to the exceedingly rich production value of modern full-on psytrance it is rather easy to get stuck there, as little else mixes into it. More modern new school Goa trance provided a sensible exit to keep the cavalcade of substyles flowing.
This mix eschews nostalgia for futurism; almost no references to past music were included apart from Ajja’s crowd-pleasing remix of Shamanic Tea, originally released on Mana Medicine in 2001.
I ended up cutting many candidates in the full-on psytrance and new school Goa trance segments for having tacky samples about drugs or whatever. Carl Sagan samples though? Sign me up!
